A life in music and letters

About

Ehsan Hajialiasgar

Ehsan Hajialiasgar is a vocalist, composer, music educator, poet and author who, for more than a quarter of a century, has carried Persian poetry and song from Tehran to California and entrusted them to generations of students. His work is a bridge between the ancient radif of Persian music and new musical languages — from classical Persian singing to fusions with Spanish flamenco, traditional pop, traditional jazz and classical music.

Beginnings

His story began at home. He was born in Tehran on June 1, 1981, into a family devoted to art and letters. His father, a singer with a voice of rare sweetness, was his first teacher, and from early childhood instilled in him the art of song and poetic recitation, until a love of poetry and classical Persian singing took root in his very being. On his father's advice he sought out the foremost masters of Persian vocal music and gathered richly from the harvest of their knowledge. He mastered the vocal dastgāhs, and his fascination with the tar led him to study that instrument as well.

His childhood unfolded in the shade of poetry. By the age of twelve he knew by heart much of the verse of Ferdowsi, the quatrains of Khayyam, the ghazals of Attar, Rumi, Saadi and Hafez, and a treasury of other Persian poets; a year later, at thirteen, he won first place nationwide in Iran's national mosha'ereh, the traditional poetry-recitation contest. He went on to complete specialized training in vocal technique, the art of tahrir, and the radif and dastgāhs of Persian music, and devoted himself to a deep study of the vocal style of the Isfahan school, morakkab-khāni, the union of poetry and music, and the aesthetics of blending different musical traditions.

From classical song to new horizons

In 2008 he received his teaching qualification from Iran's Ministry of Culture. The following year he created his first album, Dad-e Del, released in 2010 — the true beginning of his professional career. Yet the search for new horizons drew him toward fusion: in 2012 he released Avayee Dar Flamenco, a dialogue between Persian song and Spanish flamenco. He went on to compose and arrange the albums Hadis-e Eshgh, in 2014, and Her Memories, in 2015.

The year 2016 marked a turning point. He became a first-grade member of the instructors and instrumentalists of the House of Music of Iran and released Bong, composed and written by himself — a work that interweaves Persian and Western instruments — together with the single Tardid, in the traditional-pop style. That same year he emigrated to the United States and settled in San Jose, California, where he founded the Aria School of Art and Music and Vezvezak Music Studio and began offering specialized, advanced instruction in classical Persian music to the Iranian diaspora.

His first years away from home were richly productive. In 2017 he performed more than seventeen concerts in cities across the United States, and in the same period published his book The History of Iran's Music, which was warmly received by lovers of Persian music and has since gone through four printings. In 2018 he founded and registered the Shahan Music Ensemble and released Makhmour, a traditional-pop album in his own arrangement.

The journey continued in the years that followed: the single Iran-e Man in 2021; the traditional-pop albums Zakhmeh, in 2024, and Shahraz, in 2025; and, in 2026, Fragments of Seasons, a collection of his classical compositions.

Pen and publishing

Alongside music, the pen became his constant companion, and since 2021 writing has held a special place in his work. That year he began The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in Seven Languages and the textbook From Darāmad to Forud; in 2022 he wrote the music-education book From Silence to Symphony. In 2025 he wrote the textbooks A Brief Guide to Classical Music and Sight-Reading from Zero to Mastery, and in 2026 he completed Six Hundred Classical Melodies, a collection of sheet music for performers spanning every era of classical music.

Fiction entered his world in 2023, when he began the seven-volume novel The School of Broken Minds and the novel Women of France; The Deep Archive followed in 2024, and in 2026 he began the seven-volume novel The Last Memory Exchange and his own Divan of Ghazals.

His artistic vision has never been confined to music and literature. Photography has long been part of his life: in 2021 he became a member of the Photographic Society of America (PSA), and in 2024 of Professional Photographers of America (PPA).

Today

Today, after twenty-six years of teaching, he directs Vezvezak Music Studio in San Jose, California, where more than one hundred and fifty students a year benefit from his instruction. In 2026 he formally registered Vezvezak in the State of California, as a house that now publishes film, music and books. That same year he became an active member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT).

The path that began with his father's voice continues today in the voices of his students.
